Helpful hints for spotting a sick society

According to David Cameron
This was not about government cuts ... it was about behaviour
... people showing indifference to right and wrong
... people with a twisted moral code
... people with a complete absence of self-restraint

Like this ...

Stretford woman (two children one and five years old) in prison for five months after pleading guilty to receiving stolen goods (a pair of shorts) from a rioter

Definitely not like this ...

Salford woman (no children) accused of defrauding taxpayers of £13,320 in unpaid capital gains tax. When discovered admitted guilt by writing out cheque for Inland Revenue. Remains uncharged. Not in prison and keeps her £65,000 a year salary.

Cameron again.
Do we have the determination to confront the slow motion moral collapse that has taken place in parts of our country these past few generations?

So is that moral collapse in this part?

Or in this part?

Or perhaps in this part?

No, no, no. Don't be stupid - it's in this part.

Obvious really.

There is a high level of moral outrage in society at the moment. Doubtless, many would say this is quite justifiable. Criminal actions deserve to be dealt with. There are some major problems with this discourse however. As CZ has pointed out the perpetrators of some crimes are severely punished, others are not. There is both a lack of proportionality and a lack of justice here.

Some of those both in high places and elsewhere should reflect before they condemn. There are those who consider themselves to be respectable members of society, above reproach. Yet amongst this group of citizens there are those who happily and easily carry out acts which inflict suffering on others, whether neighbours or the wider community. They might be 'petty' vandals, they might undermine the community through their actions, or desecrate the environment. Some acts are technically criminal others are morally criminal.

Some need to look in the mirror and reflect on their own actions before condemning others.

Right on mate. What's the betting that all these new powers the Tories are so keen for the police to use - baton rounds, water cannon and the like - will be first tested at the next demonstration against this Government's cuts then?

  4. Thanks for pointing that out. As you will have seen we've let Ms Nevin out on appeal. We are still investigating the cae of the Salford woman, clearly a lot more serious.

  5. The news we wont get
"News just coming in that a number of bankers and others engaged in the financial sector have just been arrested. A police spokesman said 'these people have been arrested and will probably be charged with fraud and undermining the economy, very serious offences.' In other news, there are unofficial reports of a number of Government ministers about to resign on the grounds of defrauding the electorate by changing policy when in office or by being incompetent and about to destroy the economy."
